In 2023, Alsace’s legendary cabaret theater the Royal Palace Music Hall prepared to launch its annual spectacular featuring over 40 dancers, mimes, circus performers and entertainers from around the world. The production, Grand Amour, tells a broad-reaching story with roots in the past, present and future and includes a variety of musical styles, lush costumes and intricate staging. What better way for one of France’s top two cabarets to set their show apart than to bring in Superbien to create ten 3D digital tableaus – lively and engaging backdrops for this story about the surprise, joy and endurance of love? The Superteam was jazzed to be a part of this magical performance and we wanted to play our part perfectly.

Grand Amour is a story within a story. One thousand years in the future, in a world where love is extinct, a renowned researcher discovers a time capsule containing a journal. The diary details a love story between a bartender and an artist back in some mysterious place called “New York.” To debut his discovery, the researcher organizes a grand opening to so that he can show this jaded new world what love really did exist once. Grand Amour then plays out in all its glitzy glory.

For visual content that would literally set the stage for a narrative ranging from Chinatown to Little Italy, Central Park to Madison Square Garden, with subway rides, jazz clubs and street scenes in between, the Royal Palace had a clear vision of what would work. The triptych screens flanking the stage are immense – the largest over 52’ wide. These living tableaus needed to compliment the performers, costumes and lighting and not compete with all the razzle dazzle of the performance itself. The resulting virtual backdrops are playful and rich, at times subtle and stunning, creating an environment where every note matters, every gesture tells its own story. 

The show’s catchphrase is “one meeting can change everything,” and this time, the meeting between Royal Palace and Superbien certainly changed Grand Amour into the best slice of humor, elegance and talent it could be. Bravo!
